The Kosteriana Blue fir, the illuminated one, the eccentric native to North America, slow growing, silver blue needles that become silvery in the dark.
From the robust and deep root system develops a conical tree with an erect trunk wrapped in a thick scaly purple-gray bark.
The numerous branches, sometimes declining, are covered with rigid quadrangular white-blue needles.
The plant produces green and then brown cylindrical female cones, up to 12 cm long.
Flowering: the silver fir blooms from April to May. On the same plant, female flowers of light green color and male flowers of red color bloom.
The flowers are followed by the fruits of erect cylindrical light brown cones containing obovate seeds.
Exposure and climate: prefers sunny or semi-shady places; it does not fear the cold and very harsh temperatures even below 0 ° C.
Soil: prefers soft, moist soil with slightly well-drained pH.
Watering: young specimens fear prolonged drought and very prolonged drought, therefore it is advisable to water young specimens during the summer months, but only when the soil is dry. Adult specimens can tolerate short periods of drought, but it is good to check the soil if the summer season is not very rainy.
